Bastia didn’t had any relegation woes last season and a big credit for that goes to keeper Landreau who made some exceptional games. Now Landreau transferred-out and Bastia will have to double the defensive efforts in order to compensate.
Alongside Landreau they also lost another important defensive minded player, central midfielder Sable. But not only the defense had to suffer important losses as key winger Khazri left the squad as well. Besides them, Bastia will also have to do without a couple of rotation players, so the overall strength will be heavily diminished: wingers Krasic and Raspentino, forward Bruno, attacking midfielder Ilan and central defender Harek transferred-out too.
There is no doubt Bastia will be weaker this season even if they finally succeeded in transferring-in forward Brandao from St Etienne. Other players that arrived, like winger Ayite from Reims and midfielder Gillet from Anderlecht are nothing special.
Leaving aside the changes in the field, Bastia will also have an inexperienced coach this season, former French international Claude Makelele for whom this a debut in the coaching career…
Marseille got some impressive results in the pre-season friendlies, outplaying teams like Benfica or Leverkusen after solid performances. Maybe their best player, play-maker Valbuena missed those games, so the results are even more praiseworthy.
Marseille have a deep squad with valuable substitutes on almost all positions and this can assure continuity in case of injuries or suspensions. If last season was a bitter disappointment now Marseille have a real chance of making amends.
According to what happened in friendlies there is a good chance that new coach Bielsa will change the system and Marseille will start playing with 3 central defenders, while the fullbacks will get more involved in the offensive phase.
Marseille will most probably miss Mario Lemina who suffered an injury in a friendly.
All the changes in hosts’ camp (many players leaving + new inexperienced coach) can tilt the balance in Marseille’s favor, especially with guests looking solid this summer. Marseille -0.5 at 2.08
