The first game was not as disputed as the scoreline suggests (2-1) and certainly not that tense as one would think for a game in which the winner is scored in the final seconds.
Bordeaux exercised a moderate pressure throughout the 90 minutes and it was somewhat typical of them. Apoel hoped for a draw and were happy to sit back in numbers and reject all incoming danger.
Goes without saying it did not ended that well for the Cypriots. Hopefully they’ve learned their lesson and we will see a different approach now.
Bordeaux’s coach Gillot left at home almost the entire defense: fullbacks Mariano and Orban and central defender Henrique.
Henrique is by far the best defensive player in Bordeaux’s squad and whenever he’s out the consequences are seen on the scoreboard.
For the fullback positions there are replacements. In Mariano’s place most probably we will see versatile Faubert. Lately he’s been used mostly as a winger so he is accustomed with being more advanced and neglecting the defensive phase.
On the other side Bordeaux will start with savage Poundje. He is young and restless and his attitude makes him prone to getting red cards or conceding penalties. There is something really wrong with him…
In the central defense coach Gillot will pick from either Brechet or Planus. If the latter plays we will have a goal feast…
Considering that Apoel realized nothing can be achieved by staying in defense, and thinking they really want to continue the European adventure, I am banking on them to score against Bordeaux’s depleted defense.
Upfront Bordeaux are still without striker Diabate but I hope for Rolan to play as together with Jussie they are capable of fast and destabilizing actions. If by any chance Bordeaux won’t be able to infiltrate the penalty box, there’s always Obraniak and Sertic able to score with rocket like shots (like against Nantes last round).
Anyone who saw Bordeaux’s game vs Nantes and had a look on Apoel’s stats would consider me mad only for thinking to bet on over. But the circumstances are different now and bookies failed to adapt. That is why we can get the huge price of 1.70 for over 2 goals (money back if only 2 goals are scored). This is simply a must bet.
